Garden Planning and Lawns
Posted in Lawn Care & Maintenance on Thursday, 21 April 2011
A well planned lawn garden is a successful garden. Follow our tips to creating your perfect outside space.
Here at Sir Walter we believe that planning and designing your garden is a crucial part of its overall success, and your lawn is a major consideration. How much lawn area you have will depend on a number of factors:
ENVIRONMENT
How much sunlight versus shade do you have?
What soil type does your garden have?
What climate do you have in your region?
LIFESTYLE
Do you have kids and / or pets?
What other family activities will happen on the lawn?
SCALE
Getting the right balance between hard surfaces like paving and decks, garden beds and lawn.
WATER & MAINTENANCE
Available water, mowing and general maintenance may well influence the size of your lawn. Choosing a drought tolerant, low maintenance variety like Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo will make a big difference.
SOFT & HARD SURFACE RATIOS
The percentage of hard and soft surfaces is allocated for your property by your local council. This is particularly relevant for new homes, renovations and extensions. Hard surfaces prevent water absorption into the soil, resulting in more water run off, in so, putting more pressure on the storm water system, which can lead to flooding. As we all know, that can be a very nasty business.
SCALE DRAWING
Putting together a scale drawing on some graph paper is an excellent way of getting your garden plan in order. Clearly mark all the main features, existing and proposed, house, paving, driveway, deck, shed, pool, garden beds, and of course your lawn.
Once completed, a scale drawing makes life easy when calculating areas, volumes and quantities of the various components, like the turf.
